Product Description
The Designline cold island well is a drop-in refrigerated display unit designed to be built into a countertop surface, allowing customer self-service access from both sides. The elliptical profile gantry houses diffused illumination to present chilled food attractively, along with an eye-level digital temperature readout and a lockable control panel positioned on the operator side. The unit operates on R290 hydrocarbon refrigerant, which carries a lower environmental impact than many alternatives and tends to reduce long-term running costs. The condensing unit is underslung, and ventilation is managed via the supplied air grilles, meaning no additional ventilation ducting is typically required provided the installation space beneath the counter is properly configured.
In a busy service environment, the unit is designed for continuous 24-hour operation, making it well suited to self-service counters in cafeterias, staff restaurants, food-to-go operations, and hotel buffet settings where the display needs to hold safe food core temperatures consistently through service periods. The chilled well maintains food core temperature between -1°C and 5°C, supporting food safety compliance without operator intervention during service. The underslung condensate evaporator removes the need for a site drain connection, which simplifies installation considerably.
From a practical standpoint, several features support day-to-day operation:
- Modular, removable deck plates make cleaning the well base more straightforward at end of service
- Curved toughened glass sneeze screens protect food on both sides while maintaining clear visibility
- The lockable temperature control reduces the risk of accidental or unauthorised adjustment
- The unit ships with a 2m lead and plug-top, so commissioning requires no hardwired electrical connection
- The integral condensate evaporator removes the need for a drain point at the installation location
Installation involves cutting an aperture in the countertop to accept the well, fitting the supplied air grilles to maintain airflow to the condensing unit, and ensuring adequate clearance beneath the counter for the refrigeration components. At 111kg, the unit is substantial, and the counter or support structure will need to be specified accordingly. GN containers are sold separately, and the well accommodates a three-by-full-size GN layout. The plug-and-play electrical connection keeps installation straightforward for most fit-outs, though the counter build itself should be planned carefully to ensure the air grille positions are not obstructed.
This unit is well suited to medium-volume self-service operations where a built-in, customer-facing chilled display is required. It suits cafeterias, serveries, and food-to-go counters where consistent presentation and food safety over extended service periods matter. For higher-throughput sites or larger countertop spans, a wider or higher-capacity model may be more appropriate.
If you are specifying a counter build or are unsure whether this unit suits your space and service volumes, the team is happy to talk through the detail before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions
- It works well in medium-volume self-service environments such as cafeterias, staff restaurants, hotel buffets, and food-to-go counters where chilled food needs to be accessible to customers from both sides of the counter over extended service periods. If your throughput is particularly high or your counter run is significantly longer, it is worth discussing whether a larger or higher-capacity unit would serve you better.
- The unit drops into an aperture cut in the countertop, with the condensing unit hanging beneath the counter surface. The supplied air grilles must be fitted to ensure adequate airflow to the condensing unit, so the void beneath the counter needs to be kept clear of obstructions. At 111kg, the counter structure needs to be built to support the weight, and this should be factored into the counter specification before installation. There is no drain requirement thanks to the integral condensate evaporator, and the unit connects via a standard 2m plug-top lead.
- GN containers are sold separately. The well accommodates a three-by-full-size (1/1 GN) layout, so you will need to source compatible GN trays to suit your menu and portion sizes. If you are unsure which GN configuration works best for your service, we can advise.
