Gravity Drain or Drain Pump? Choosing the Right Warewasher Drainage

Most commercial glasswashers and dishwashers can be bought with or without a drain pump. Getting this choice right before the machine is plumbed in can save you an expensive change later.

When you need a drain pump

A drain pump is required whenever the lowest point of the machine's drain system sits below the highest point of your waste system. This is common where the machine stands on the floor and can't be raised onto a plinth or stand.

When you can go without one

If the machine can be raised so that it sits above your waste plumbing, it will empty by gravity alone, and you won't need a drain pump.

Why go gravity drain if you can

There are two practical benefits to a gravity drain machine where your plumbing allows it: it's generally around £100 cheaper, and there's no drain pump to block with broken glass, lemon peel, cocktail sticks and other debris.

Get it right first time

Buying a gravity drain machine when a drain pump was actually needed is often not spotted until the machine is plumbed in, and can be a costly problem to put right. If you're in any doubt, speak to us or your plumber before you order, or choose the drain pump model to be safe.
