Product Description
The EWC Automatic Hot Water Softener is a timer-controlled inline softening unit designed to treat the hot water supply feeding commercial dishwashers, glasswashers, and other equipment where limescale build-up is a known operational problem. It works by exchanging the calcium and magnesium ions responsible for hardness with sodium, delivering consistently soft water to connected appliances.
In hard water areas — which cover a significant portion of the UK — untreated water causes progressive scale accumulation inside boilers, wash arms, heating elements, and pipework. Over time this reduces heating efficiency, restricts flow, and shortens equipment life. A softener installed upstream of the machine addresses this at source, rather than relying solely on dosing chemicals to manage the effects after the fact.
- Cleaner wash and rinse results with fewer spots and streaks on glassware and crockery
- Reduced reliance on rinse aid and other chemical dosing
- Lower risk of element and spray arm blockages requiring engineer callouts
- Helps preserve manufacturer warranties, many of which are void without adequate water treatment
- Lower ongoing servicing costs over the life of the connected equipment
The unit is timer-controlled, meaning regeneration cycles can be set to run during quiet periods — typically overnight — so the softener does not interfere with service. It is rated for hot water inlet temperatures up to 55°C, making it suitable for connection to the hot feed on most commercial warewashing equipment.
If you are unsure whether your water hardness level warrants a softener, or which unit is appropriate for your setup, our team is happy to talk it through before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions
- If your site is in a hard or very hard water area — which includes much of southern and eastern England, the Midlands, and parts of Yorkshire — a softener is strongly advisable. Signs that hardness is already causing problems include white scale deposits on wash arms or heating elements, poor drying results, and increased chemical consumption. Many equipment manufacturers also stipulate water treatment as a warranty condition, so it is worth checking your machine documentation.
- The timer control allows you to schedule regeneration outside of service hours, typically overnight when the machine is not in use. This means the softener is fully operational during your busiest periods without interruption.
- This unit is designed primarily for single-machine or light-use installations. If you are running two or more warewashing machines simultaneously, or you have particularly high daily wash volumes, a higher-capacity softener would be the more appropriate choice.
