EWC Prima Calcium Treatment Units for Coffee Machines
£154.00(£184.80 inc VAT)
The EWC Prima range of Calcium Treatment Units (CTUs) are water conditioning filters designed specifically for use with espresso machines and bean-to-cup coffee systems. Rather than simply filtering sediment, they work by treating the calcium hardness in the mains water supply — the primary cause of limescale build-up inside boilers, group heads, and heat exchangers. Left untreated, scale accumulation shortens equipment life, increases energy consumption, and affects extraction quality.
In a busy café or hospitality environment, consistent water quality is as important as the coffee itself. Hard water causes gradual but significant damage to espresso machine components, and descaling reactive maintenance is both disruptive and costly. A correctly sized CTU fitted inline before the machine provides continuous protection without interrupting service, and the treatment process also helps to stabilise the water profile in a way that supports better flavour and clarity in the cup.
From an operational and environmental standpoint, the Prima units offer a practical advantage over single-use plastic cartridge filters:
- Regenerable resin means units can be returned, recharged, and reused rather than discarded
- Reduced plastic waste compared to conventional disposable filter cartridges
- Range spans from compact tabletop units through to multi-machine installations
- Suitable for sites with varying water hardness levels across the UK
- Long litre capacity between regenerations helps reduce ongoing maintenance intervals
Sizing is an important consideration. The correct unit depends on your local water hardness, daily coffee volume, and whether you are protecting a single machine or several. Fitting a unit that is too small for the throughput means more frequent regeneration cycles; fitting one that is oversized is rarely harmful but represents unnecessary outlay. The range covers tabletop single-group machines through to multi-machine setups, so there is generally a suitable option regardless of site size.
Installation is straightforward for a qualified plumber — the unit connects inline on the cold water feed to the machine and requires no electrical supply. Access for periodic regeneration or exchange should be factored into where the unit is positioned.
If you are unsure which size is appropriate for your water hardness and coffee volume, or whether a CTU is the right treatment approach for your particular machine, we are happy to talk it through before you order.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know which Prima CTU size is right for my site?
Sizing depends on two main factors: your local water hardness and your average daily coffee volume. Harder water areas consume the resin capacity faster, meaning a higher-volume unit will be needed to achieve a reasonable service interval between regenerations. If you know your water hardness in ppm or °dH and have a rough idea of daily shot count, we can help you identify the appropriate unit before you order.
How does regeneration work and how often will it be needed?
When the resin in the CTU reaches its treatment capacity, the unit needs to be either regenerated on-site using a salt solution or returned to EWC for professional recharging. The frequency depends on water hardness and throughput — a unit correctly matched to your site should provide a practical service interval rather than requiring frequent attention. Keeping a note of installation date and litres consumed makes it straightforward to track when regeneration is due.
Is a calcium treatment unit the right choice for every espresso machine installation?
A CTU is well suited to most espresso and bean-to-cup installations, particularly in medium to hard water areas where scale is an active risk. In very soft water areas the case is less urgent, though some operators still use treatment to maintain a consistent water profile for flavour reasons. If your machine manufacturer specifies a particular water quality standard, it is worth checking that a CTU meets that requirement — we can advise if you are unsure.
