Tempered glass gives noticeably better resistance to the knocks and thermal stress of a busy restaurant or bar than standard glass. It holds up better through commercial glasswasher cycles and is less susceptible to rim chipping during handling, stacking and polishing. Tempered glass is not unbreakable, so care in transit, storage and glass collection still makes a difference to its life.
